What does it really mean to be authentic? Most people would agree that an authentic individual is genuine, real, true to oneself, etcetera. My understanding of an authentic person is a person who only wears one hat. Let me explain myself, a lot of times depending on the situation as individuals we tend to adapt. In other words, we adjust ourselves in a way that is the most suitable to the context, and maybe even the people that we're hanging out with.
Maybe at home, you might wear the "son/ daughter" hat, or maybe the "roommate" hat, at school you wear the "student" hat, and at work you wear the "finance specialist" hat, or the "inside sales" hat.... Either way, it can be very exhausting.
Value congruence is the extent to which an individual can be consistent with their own self-image. I am not saying that you should act crazy everywhere you go, but I am saying that you should feel free to be who you are everywhere. It is impossible to please everyone around you, trust me... I've tried. Save the energy, be yourself and be happy.
